I absolutely love giving gifts to my friends and family members. But I used to hate the process of shopping for and finding great gifts that weren’t overly expensive, especially around the holidays. I was always wondering what gifts I should get for the people closest to me, and additionally, how much I should be spending on said gifts.

Raise your hand if you’ve asked yourself these questions before.

I didn’t have a plan, and because of that I often spent more than I really wanted to on something that I wasn’t sure my loved ones would truly enjoy. Maybe you’ve had these feelings too. Don’t worry, I’m about to teach you a better way!

Tip 1: Make a List

Don’t forget to check it twice! Wouldn’t want to forget anyone.

My first tip is to make a list right now of every gift you need to buy for the entire year – including birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Organize this list by month. When you’re planning your monthly budget, look ahead at the next month or two to see if any special occasions are coming up. Then all you need to do is add the proper amount to your spending plan. This will ensure you never get caught off guard and need to purchase a last minute gift.

The list makes it easy to anticipate and plan gifts in advance.

Tip 2: Plan Your Spending

The spending plan gives you the freedom to feel good about your gift purchases.

That brings me to tip number 2: plan right now how much money you’re going to spend on each gift throughout the year. If you’re married, this is one of those decisions that you’re going to need to make with your spouse, and there might be some disagreement. But at least if you have the discussion now for every gift, you can avoid having it every month.

The spending plan also helps you plan your monthly budget.

On the topic of a gift spending plan, there always seems to be unexpected additional gifts that are needed throughout the year. Decide now how much you’re comfortable spending if you’re invited to a wedding, baby shower, or birthday celebration. Be prepared to spend up to that amount if one of those occasions comes along.

When one of these kinds of events comes up, we already know what we’re going to spend.

Now you know for whom you need to purchase gifts throughout the entire year, and how much you’re comfortable spending on each. Only one question left. What the heck do you get for people when the time comes? This was always the hardest part for me. I was so excited when I came up with this simple solution. Tip number 3 is to take notes!

Tip 3: Take Notes!

One of many things that can be solved with a pen and a paper…or a notes app.

In the notes app on my phone, I’ve got a document in which I keep a running list of gift ideas for everyone I purchase gifts for. Every time I come across something and think “That would really be a great gift for so-and-so” I take out my phone and add it to the list. Additionally, every time I go and visit with friends and family, I’m on the lookout for things that they might need or find useful, especially things that I already own and benefit from. If something comes to mind during my visit, I immediately add it to my list.

Not ruining any surprises, these are previous gifts.

For example: A few years ago I noticed my father in law was struggling trying to judge whether some chicken was finished cooking. Right then, I added a cooking thermometer to his gift list. When Father’s Day came around a few months later, my wife and I knew exactly what to get him – and we knew he would love it.

Father’s Day was a huge success! He used the meat thermometer that very night!

I’m always on the lookout for great gift ideas. What’s your favorite gift that you’ve given or received lately? Let me know in the comments.
